High Country Caving Checklist

Clothing List:

You can change into your caving clothes and leave your traveling clothes behind. Your caving clothes should cover your entire body to keep you warm and relatively clean. Your clothing should be loose fitting and unrestricting as you will be walking, scrambling, and crawling at times. The cave remains a constant 55F degrees year round so you don't wear heavy cold wather clothing. Many routes will follow underground streams, so you will get wet and muddy.

  • Long sleeve shirt - lightweight and synthetic is best. Lightweight thermal top is best.
  • Long baggy pants, overalls, or coveralls - synthetics are best.
  • Light hiking boots or running shoes with good tread. The caves are often muddy and wet so really old shoes with no tread will make climbing and navigating more difficult.
  • Wool socks
  • Bandana or hat
  • Lightweight gloves
  • Lightweight fleece top
  • Change of clean clothes for after trip

Gear List:

  • Small day pack (in cave)
  • Doubled-up ziplock bag with TP just in case you forget to go outside. (in cave)
  • 1 Qt. water bottle (in cave)
  • Lunch and/or snacks (in cave)
  • Spare flashlight with new batteries (optional, in cave)
  • Small trash bag in cave (everything that goes in must come out with you)
  • Large trash bag for dirty clothes after trip
  • Camera with flash (in cave)
  • Small personal first aid kit

High Country Provides:

  • Guides
  • Helmets with headlamps
  • Master first aid kit

Depending on the cave, pre-selected for the experience level of your group, the caving adventure will include: the exploration of exquisite cave mineral formations, scrambling over mounds of "cave breakdown", crawling through tight flows of travertine, and hiking alongside underground streams. Tumbling Rock, our most popular cave, includes a magnificent hike to one the highest underground waterfalls in any cave in North America. No prior experience is necessary but an adventurous spirit is a must.

If you have any medical conditions or allergies, you need to advise HC and bring your medications.
